Can Men be Clothing Designers?
Clothing designers have traditionally been women, but increasingly men are entering the fashion design industry and proving themselves as creative and successful clothing designers. While women still dominate the industry, men are increasingly being recognized for their designs and for the impact they have had.
History of Male Clothing Designers
Sir Cecil Beaton was a British photographer, illustrator, and costume and fashion designer who worked extensively in theater and the film industry. He is credited with inventing the “Princess Line” in dressmaking and was responsible for outfitting the cast in the famous 1953 film version of Romeo and Juliet.
Christian Dior was a famous French designer who opened his own fashion house in 1946; this began the era of creating different clothing lines and collections each season. Yves Saint Laurent, a French fashion designer, was another university-educated designer who began to make his mark in Paris fashion circles.
In the early 2000s, a new wave of male designers emerged. Vivienne Westwood, an English fashion experimentation that included bondage and bondage-inspired designs for men and women, was just one of these influential male fashion designers.
Other prominent male fashion designers in the modern era are the British “Savile Row” institution’s tailor Ozwald Boetang, Italian minimalist designer Dirk Bikkembergs, talented Swiss designer Bruno Pieters, and American-based Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto.
The Future of Men in Fashion Designing
With continuing advances in fashion technology, many more opportunities are available for aspiring male fashion designers. Designers such as Hedi Slimane, Tom Ford and Raf Simons are a handful of influential male fashion designers of our time.
While they provide modern side of fashion, they provide inspiring clothing designs to the public, proving that men can be strong forces in the fashion industry.
Men can make an impact in the fashion community as successful fashion designers. By continuing to break through fashion boundaries and creating stylish designs, male fashion designers can be important figures in this ever-evolving fashion world. By being creative, forward-thinking and open to different ideas, male fashion designers will continue to contribute to the fashion industry for years to come.
