When Was Elastic Used in Clothing?

The History of Elastic
Elastic was first developed by the British scientist Thomas Hancock in 1820. Whilst the material was originally crafted from rubber, in the 1950s it was made from a range of plastics, including latex and elastic fibres, which were more resistant and durable than their predecessors.
Uses of Elastic in Clothing
One of the earliest uses for elastic in clothing was for use in waistbands. This was to provide a more comfortable fit, and to help stop items from becoming loose over time. Elastic was also used in shirts, as it could help to provide a tighter fit and improve overall comfort.
When Was Elastic Used in Clothing?
Whilst elastic first appeared in garments in the 1800s, it wasn’t widely used until the 1950s and 1960s. This was when the synthetic elastic fibres and latex appeared, which offered a much more durable and comfortable solution than its natural counterparts.
Today, elastic can be found in many different items of clothing, including:
